Large browsers decide to temporarily continue to support legacy TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, major browsers have decided to temporarily extend support for legacy TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols. Similar plans have also been expressed by the developers of Firefox, Chrome and Edge.

Previously, browsers planned to abandon unsecure versions of the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols by early 2020. Today, TLS versions such as 1.2 and 1.3 are already widely supported.

However, the abandonment of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 was eventually suspended. The main reason for this approach: increased support for some government sites that still work with outdated versions of the TLS protocol. In the midst of a pandemic, users should have unhindered access to all the important sites on the Internet.

When will TLS 1.0 and 1.1 stop being used?

There are no confirmed dates. Browser developers plan to return to this issue around the beginning of summer.

At the moment, we know that Microsoft plans to disable support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in its Edge 84 version, which is scheduled for July 2020.
